Acute abdomen in the adult

Acute abdomen is a medical challenge where the emphasis is on decision making about referral rather than on diagnosis. The clinical acumen of the physician does play a role but it has to be kept in mind that the abdomen is a 'pandoras box' where the most unlikely things can come out. Special attention should be placed on diagnosing the acute life threatening emergencies in a patient, like perforative peptic ulcer, mesenteric artery thrombosis, intestinal obstruction and ruptured ectopic.

A detailed history taking, clinical examination and accurate investigations will definitely help in the management but remember that here the emphasis is on timely refeferral. Such an approach will help prevent complications and reduce the associated mortality and morbidity.
