Syringomyelia

In Syringomyelia a cyst, called a syrinx, forms within the spinal cord. It expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the cord. Patient may present with weakness and wasting of muscles especially in hands and arms, fasciculations and loss of pain & temperature sensation. MRI is the preferred method of investigation for diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Surgical treatment is aimed at correcting the condition that allowed the syrinx to form. In some patients it may also be necessary to drain the syrinx, by a shunt
