Orbital cellulitis

The common causes of orbital cellulitis include infection in the paranasal sinuses, mastoiditis, trauma to the orbit, and haematogenic spread (sepsis). Damage to the optic nerve caused by infection and oedema impairs vision and may rapidly lead to loss of vision. The infection can also spread intracranially leading to CNS symptoms and death. Suspicion of orbital cellulitis is an indication for urgent referral to a hospital with emergency radiographic facilities (CT, MRI) and eye and ENT specialists. Treatment consists of i.v. antibiotics, per oral corticosteroids and careful follow-up. Possible abscesses are drained.
