A foreign body on the cornea

A patient with a foreign body in the eye presents with the symptoms of irritation, pain and excessive lacrimation. Commonest objects that get in the eye are sand, dirt or metallic chips from hammering, grinding etc. Conjunctival foreign body either gets washed out with the tears or can be removed by syringing with saline. Corneal FBs need to be carefully removed. After instillation of local anaesthetic drops FB is removed either with the tip of a hypodermic needle or with a FB spud. Padding the eye for the time it takes for the effect of local anaesthetic to wear off, helps in avoiding repeat FB.
