Autism

Autism affects many parts of the brain, but exact mechanism is not understood. Heredity probably plays an important role in its causation. Parents usually notice warning signs in the first year or two years. In some cases, the baby seems "different" from birth, unresponsive to people or focusing intently on one item for long periods of time. Although, there is no cure; early intervention may help children gain social skills and self-care. Living independently is very unlikely with severe autism.

The first signs of an autism spectrum disorder can appear in children who seem to have been developing normally. When an engaging, babbling toddler suddenly becomes silent, withdrawn, self-abusive or indifferent to social overtures, something is definitely wrong. It is noticed that parents are usually correct about noticing developmental problems; they may not realize the specific nature or degree of the problem. An autistic child should be referred to rehabilitation as early as possible.
