Approach to cardiac arrhythmia

Symptoms of arrhythmia are palpitations, loss of consciousness, feeling of a sudden jerk, feeling of weakness and a shortness of breath. An exact description and history of the symptom is necessary for the evaluation of an arrhythmia. The clinical examination apart from the pulse character and blood pressure must pick up murmurs if any. The carotid artery must be palpated [slow rising for aortic stenosis].The ECG will point to QT interval, chamber hypertrophies and also pick up pathological q waves. Basic blood investigations along with serum electrolytes and TSH must be done. Sometimes a 24 hours ambulatory ECG monitoring is required. Tests made according to a cardiologist's decision include 2DECHO perfusion tests, coronary angiography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
