Primary pulmonary hypertension
Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) is characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure with no apparent cause. Aetiology is heterogeneous, and generally difficult to confirm (genetic defect in a minority of cases). The use of appetite suppressing medications may increase the risk of disease. In some patients the disease is secondary, resulting from chronic pulmonary embolism. Dyspnoea on exertion is the only symptom at first. It is present in approx 60% of patients. Women are more likely to be symptomatic than men.
