Orthodontics

Orthodontia is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions, arising as a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw position or both. Orthodontic treatment is generally recommended to correct dental displacement but can also deal with the control and modification of facial growth. Although orthodontia is commonly perceived as a purely aesthetic modality, it is also often prescribed for more practical reasons ie providing the patient with a functionally improved bite (better occlusion of both jaws).
