Benign lesions of the tongue

Benign lesions of the tongue have a broad differential diagnosis ranging from benign idiopathic processes to infections, deficiency of nutrients and degeneration of papillae. Most tongue lesions resolve spontaneously (or with simple treatment) within a week...if not, they should be evaluated further or biopsied for a definitive diagnosis. Some tongue lesions may be clues to other underlying illnesses which require further evaluation. Management consists of treating the underlying disorder if known, avoid all possible irritants, maintain good dental hygiene and deployment of topical rinses and local treatments.
