Viral Infections of the Oral Mucosa

Human herpes virus (HHV) and human papilloma virus (HPV) are the most common causes of primary viral infections of the oral cavity, which may be primary or recurrent infections. Eight types of HHV (including varicella zoster, Epstein Barr and CMV) have been linked with oral disease. In immunocompetent patients, primary herpetic infections are annoying and uncomfortable, but they rarely cause significant morbidity or mortality. The accurate and timely diagnosis of such infections, coupled with the institution of appropriate treatment, can often permit quick resolution of the condition with minimal discomfort and anxiety for the patient.
