Gas gangrene

Gas gangrene, a medical emergency, is a deadly form of gangrene usually caused by Clostridium bacteria. Diagnosis is essentially clinical and is based on painful, crepitating swelling in or around a wound. Antibiotics alone are not effective to treat but debridement and surgical removal of dead tissue is a must. Some cases may require amputation. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is useful to inhibit the growth of and kill the anaerobic C. perfringens
