Carbon monoxide poisoning
Because the symptoms are so unspecific, exposure to carbon monoxide is an under-diagnosed problem. The severity of poisoning is dependent on the concentration of CO and on the exposure time Patient often has unexplained headache, fatigue (unconsciousness), nausea and vomiting. A mild poisoning is alleviated in fresh air over several hours. Breathing pure oxygen (100%) reduces the half-life of CO Hb to a couple of hours. Oxygen therapy should be given for 4- 6 hours. In severe poisonings, rapidly started hyperbaric oxygen therapy reduces neurological damage.
