Approach to a case of poisoning
Poisoning is a commonly encountered emergency in day-to-day medical practice. Commonest causes of poisoning are drugs or other ingested substances and altered sensorium including unconsciousness is the common presentation. If there is no asymmetry on neurological examination then poisoning is a likely possibility. After ensuring open airway, normal breathing and proper circulation, prevention of absorption and removal of poison form the mainstay of treatment. In select cases specific antidotes are available.
