Quinine amblyopia
Pills combining quinine with anxiolytic drugs are widely used to treat nocturnal leg cramps. Children and elderly people can accidentally take an overdose, whereas young adults may misuse these drugs for their presumed narcotic effect. Due to its quinidine-like properties, quinine prolongs the QT time and serious tachycardias may ensue. Immediate, repeated administration of copious amounts of active charcoal reduces the amount of quinine absorbed from the gut.
