Male Hypogonadism
Male hypogonadism is a condition in which the body doesn't produce enough of the sex hormone testosterone. One may be born with hypogonadism or it can develop later in life from injury or infection. The onset of hypogonadism before puberty results in eunuchoidism: long extremities, high-pitched voice, asthenic muscles, and infantile genitals. Adult-onset hypogonadism results in decreased libido, impotence and weakening of secondary sex characteristics. The treatment involves testosterone substitution for both primary and secondary hypogonadism. Patients with secondary hypogonadism, gonadotropin treatment may restore sperm production. In secondary hypogonadism, the cause of hypogonadism must also be treated (for example by surgical treatment of pituitary tumour).
