Laryngitis in children
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx generally associated with hoarseness. The most common form of laryngitis is caused by a virus hence antibiotics are not much of use. It may also be caused by a bacterial infection or a common cold, bronchitis or pneumonia. Common laryngitis is not normally associated with any breathing difficulty. Croup and epiglottitis are severe forms of laryngitis in children and can lead to dangerous or fatal respiratory blockage. Voice rest helps by reducing the inflammation of the vocal cords. A humidifier may soothe the scratchy throat typical of laryngitis. Decongestants and analgesics may relieve symptoms of an URTI, if present.
