Tonsillitis & Pharyngitis in Children
Group A streptococci cause 5 - 20% of all cases of tonsillitis. In the majority, sore throat has a viral aetiology. Viruses can also cause high fever, rash and pharyngeal exudate. - Children above 3 years and young adults (15 - 24 years) are more prone to get streptococcal infection. Culture of a throat swab is the most accurate and least expensive method. A peritonsillar abscess should be identified and treated immediately. Antibiotics form the mainstay of treatment.
