Chronic Pharyngitis
Chronic pharyngitis, is chronic inflammation of the mucous membranes of the pharynx. It is a symptom of several conditions, but most often is associated with colds; viral or bacterial infections and environmental conditions. Proper treatment depends on identifying the cause of chronic irritation. Besides infection, postnasal drip irritates the throat and hay fever and other allergies irritate paranasal sinuses. Environmental conditions eg heavy smoking or even passive smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, breathing polluted air or chemical fumes, or swallowing substances that burn or scratch the throat can also cause chronic pharyngitis. Effective treatment depends on identifying and treating the cause.
