Urinary incontinence in the Elderly
Urinary incontinence is most prevalent in institutionalised, frail elderly women and in elderly with dementia. It's prevalence rises rapidly with age. While identifying the causes of incontinence the patient's cognitive functions should be examined. It is important to exclude iatrogenic causes, e.g. certain medication. The muscles of the pelvic region should be strengthened by following special exercise programme. In elderly women atrophy should be managed by oestrogens.
