Recurrent or Chronic Pancreatitis
Consider chronic pancreatitis as the cause of recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhoea. With few exceptions the patient is a heavy drinker who has consumed 150-175 g of pure alcohol daily over 10-15 years before disease onset. The patient must stop the use of alcohol. Small meals are of benefit in cases of pain and steatorrhoea. The diet should be low in fat with no fibre. Enzyme substitution is indicated if 24-hour faecal fat is > 15 g. The effect of enzyme substitution on pain is not proven.
