Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder characterised by altered bowel habits and abdominal pain in the absence of detectable structural abnormalities. A complete blood count, stool specimen examination for ova and parasites and sigmoidoscopic examination should be done for most patients. Treatment is by counselling, dietary alterations, reassurance, careful explanation of the functional nature of the disorder and advice on how to avoid obvious food precipitants. Simethicone, antacids, activated charcoal, tricyclic agents, loperamide, diphenoxylate, bran or hydrophilic colloid and psyllium preparations have some but not definite role in a few selected cases.
