Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA)

Iron deficiency is the commonest nutritional deficiency world wide, in India, 30% of adult males, 45% adult females and 60 % children have iron deficiency The majority of cases of microcytic anaemia (MCV < 80 fl) are caused by iron deficiency If the patient has microcytic anaemia (MCV < 80 fl) and secondary anaemia appears to be excluded, iron deficiency anaemia is most likely Secondary anaemias are unlikely if there is no relevant chronic disease and past history, clinical status, ESR, CRP or leucocytosis do not indicate the presence of an underlying disease If the cause of iron deficiency is certain or evident, the situation is sufficiently well characterized and iron therapy may be initiated.

The cause of iron deficiency should be uncovered Sometimes it is impossible in practice to demonstrate the cause of iron deficiency. In such cases adequate iron therapy is initiated and a good response and its permanence are ascertained Starting iron therapy as a trial with a diagnostic goal may also be a good option.
