Oral Anticoagulation Therapy

Oral anticoagulants are administered to stop thrombosis. It is useful in primary and secondary prevention of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarctions and strokes in those who are predispose. The indications for oral anticoagulation therapy using coumarin derivatives have been expanded over the past few years, as benefits far outweigh the risks. The optimal dosage that balances the risk and benefits has to be established by maintaining prothrombin time at 1.5 times the normal and monitoring International Normalized Ratio (INR) regularly.
