Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis

The clinician should have a high index of suspicion to diagnose extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Tuberculosis affecting any site other than pulmonary is called extrapulmanory tuberculosis which includes tuberculous lymphadenitis, pleural tuberculosis, skeletal tuberculosis[potts spine- relevant], central nervous system tuberculosis, abdominal tuberculosis, renal tuberculosis, genitourinary tuberculosis, miliary tuberculosis and tuberculous pericardial effusion. The diagnosis of each usually involves a battery of comprehensive pathological biochemical and radiological tests.Hematological investigations are common to all with a few specific tests for each one of them.TB lymphadenitis is diagnosed with the help of lymph node biopsy and F.N.A.C .Pleural fluid and ascitic fluid analysis for Pleural and abdominal tuberculosis, CT scan MRI for skeletal, renal and genitourinary tuberculosis, CSF analysis for TB meningitis. TB PCR and other immunological investigations.

The treatment of extrapulmonary tuberculosis is AKT for at least 9 to 12 months depending on the response.
