Tetanus
Tetanus is a severe systemic infection in the unvaccinated individual caused by Clostridium tetani, which is found in high concentrations in the soil and in normal intestinal flora. A systemic infection with muscle spasms, most often beginning at the mandibular joint (trismus) follows the initial wound infection. Human antitetanus immunoglobulin and cleansing of the wound are the cornerstones of treatment.
