Influenza

Influenza viruses are classified into three distinct types (A, B, and C), of which influenza A viruses are clinically most important. Influenza viruses are spread from person to person primarily through droplets spread by the coughing and sneezing of infected persons. The typical incubation period for influenza is 1-4 days, with an average of 2 days. Uncomplicated influenza illness is characterized by the abrupt onset of constitutional and respiratory signs and symptoms (e.g. fever, myalgia, headache, malaise, non-productive cough, sore throat, and rhinitis). Treatment is mainly symptomatic: rest and anti-inflammatory drugs or paracetamol (not acetylsalicylic acid). Influenza vaccination is the cornerstone of the prevention of influenza.
