Hypercalcaemia and Hyperparathyroidism
Hypercalcaemia is defined as a condition where serum calcium concentration exceeds 2.65 mmol/L (serum ionized calcium > 1.3 mmol/L repeatedly). Serum intact PTH assay determines whether hypercalcaemia is parathyroid dependent or parathyroid independent. The cause of hypercalcaemia has to be determined and treated. The urgency with which treatment is needed is based on serum calcium (ionized calcium) level.
