Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in men. Chronic cough, haemoptysis and chest pain in a middle aged smoker should raise suspicion. Smoking and occupational exposure to asbestos are most important risk factors. Classified into Non-small cell lung carcinomas (80%) and Small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Spread is to local and regional lymph nodes and distant mets are found in adrenal glands, liver, brain and bones. Important diagnostic tools are plain chest x-ray and HRCT. Bronchoscopy and CT-guided biopsy help in histological diagnosis important for planning treatment. The choice of therapy is based on cell type and clinical extent of the disease (TNM stage).
