Cancer of the mouth / Oral Cavity
Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tissue of the lips or the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), or palate (roof of the mouth). Tobacco use, over-consumption of alcohol and badly-fitting dentures are some of the risk factors. A small biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. Early cancers (stage I and stage II) of the lip and oral cavity are highly curable by surgery or by radiation therapy. Most patients with stage III or stage IV tumorus are candidates for treatment by a combination of surgery and radiation therapy.
