Encephalitis in children
Encephalitis is acute inflammation of the brain, commonly caused by a viral infection. Children with encephalitis present with the triad of fever, headache, vomiting and photophobia; weakness and seizures also are common. Neck stiffness & Kernig's are rarely seen. Younger children or infants present with irritability, anorexia and fever. Examination of the CSF usually reveals raised amounts of protein and WBCs with normal glucose.
