Status Epilepticus

It is defined as either one continuous seizure or recurrent seizures without regaining consciousness in between seizures for more than 30 minutes. It is, however, believed that 5 minutes is sufficient to damage neurons and that seizures are unlikely to self-terminate by that time. In known epileptics under treatment, status is associated with poor compliance, alcohol withdrawal, and metabolic disturbances. Benzodiazepines are the mainstay of treatment followed by phenytoin. After the seizure has ended, Status epilepticus requires institutional follow-up including investigation of the aetiology (imaging, CSF and detailed laboratory studies).
