Disorders of cranial nerve XII (hypoglossal nerve) cause weakness or wasting (atrophy) of the tongue on the affected side. people have difficulty speaking, chewing, and swallowing. There is weakness of the tongue on the affected side and atrophy. Treatment depends on the cause.
