Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), or tic douloureux, is characterized by episodes of excruciating stabbing or electrical shock-like. Pain is brief and paroxysmal, but it may occur in volleys of multiple attacks. One or more branches of the trigeminal nerve (usually maxillary or mandibular) are involved. Various triggers may commonly precipitate a pain attack.Physical examination findings are normal; Carbamazepine, oxycarbazepine phenytoin, gabapentin and pregabalinare drugs which, reduce the trigeminal system hyperactivity. Microvascular Decompression (MVD) aims to cure trigeminal neuralgia by moving blood vessels away from the trigeminal nerve root. Various nerve injury or "destructive" procedures - rhizotomies are also available.
