Demyelinating Diseases
Demyelinating diseases into two main groups: acquired diseases (eg, multiple sclerosis) and hereditary neurodegenerative disorders (eg, the leukodystrophies). Without myelin, nerve impulses are slowed or stopped, leading to a constellation of neurological symptoms. Hereditary neurodegenerative disorders includes the eight identified leukodystrophies. Here, previously normal children are deprived, in rapid progression, of sight, hearing, speech and movement.
