Cataract

Cataract is either partial or total, opacification of the normal crystalline lens of the eye. A cataract should be operated on when the visual loss due to the Cataract is significant. Significant visual loss is determined by the patient's work and leisure-time activities. In working-aged people cataract should be operated on early. Patients handling machinery, or in professions like driving, flying, may need to be operated much earlier than the retired population. The cataract can be replaced by an artificial lens in a day-surgery procedure performed under local or topical anaesthesia.In-patient surgery is indicated only if the patient has major medical problems or is unable to follow up due to other disabilities.
