Detached Retina
The initial symptoms consist of visual disturbances, moving shadows and "swarms of flies" in the visual field associated with small retinal haemorrhages, and "lightning". The initial symptoms are not specific. The same symptoms can be a result of "innocent" vitreous opacities and circulatory disturbances. As retinal detachment progresses a visual field defect develops which is on the contralateral side of the detachment. The ophthalmoscopic appearance is nearly always abnormal: the detached retina is grayish, folded and mobile. The retinal vessels are dark and tortuous at the site of detachment. The retinal reflex may show a greenish grey, oscillating shadow. Surgery is the treatment of choice. The operation should be performed as soon as possible.
