Diagnosis of joint inflammation in the adult
A diagnosis of arthritis should always be based on clinical examination: without clinical signs no joint inflammation can be diagnosed. According to the ACR (American College of Rheumatology), arthritis is defined as follows: swelling and reduced mobility of the joint with associated heat, ache or pain on movement. When joint inflammation is suspected, inspection of the skin and auscultation of the heart should always be included in the clinical examination.
