Neck and Shoulder Pain
Based on history and clinical examination, neck injuries caused by trauma should be differentiated from neck pain associated with more serious illnesses. Nerve root compression and myelopathy should also be considered. Acute neck pain usually has a good prognosis and recovers spontaneously. Any factors which may aggravate the condition should be identified and alleviated. Unrelenting pain, which usually is unrelated to exercise, is suggestive of a serious illness as the cause of neck pain. The pain is often worse at rest and disturbs sleep. Whiplash is an injury to the neck caused by the neck bending forcibly forward and then backward, or vice versa.
