Headache in children
The differential diagnosis include migraine, tension headache, psychogenic headache, headaches of ocular or dental origin, sinusitis, cerebral tumours and blockage of cerebrospinal fluid circulation, sleep apnoea and Idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Thorough history, careful somatic and neurological examination, examination of the maxillary sinuses are important. Neuroradiological examinations should be considered in small children, in children with a short history of headaches and in children with vomiting or abnormal clinical findings. If the symptoms continuously affect everyday life, pharmacological treatment is indicated. Prophylactic treatment for migraine is Indicated if the attacks are severe or they recur several times a month. The maximum duration of the prophylactic treatment should be 6 months at a time.
