A child with a limp or refusing to walk
Diagnose innocent leg aches ("growing pains") on the basis of the clinical presentation and rule out arthritis. Suspect other causes of pain if the child is below 4 years of age. The psychosocial situation should be assessed particularly if there are other symptoms (headache, abdominal pain). Clinical examination to rule out other diseases and explaining the nature of the symptoms to the parents is often all that is required.
