Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in a child
UTI cannot be diagnosed on symptoms alone, or by culture of urine from a bag specimen A definitive diagnosis should be obtained by culture of urine obtained in a sterile fashion (midstream urine MSU, supra-pubic aspiration SPA, catheter specimen of urine CSU). Escherichia coli is by far the most common aetiological agent. Any child who is unwell, and most children under 6 months, should be admitted for IV antibiotics. The duration of treatment varies according to the severity of the infection, the age of the child, and the causative agent.
