Selective mutism
Selective mutism is a complex, social anxiety disorder, in which a person, mostly a child, normally capable of speech is unable to speak in certain given social settings eg school, family get togethers etc.
Selective mutism disorder is not regarded as a communication disorder, but less often it could be a symptom of either a psychotic or pervasive developmental disorder.
These children understand language and in settings where they are comfortable, secure and relaxed, are able to talk normally and most children communicate through facial expressions, gestures, etc.
Over 90% of children with Selective Mutism also have social phobia or social anxiety. Children and adolescents with Selective mutism have an actual fear of speaking and of social interactions where there is an expectation to talk.
