Risk of suicide in adolescence
In the past few years the rate of incidence of suicide has tripled in adolescent age group, rising to second or third most common cause of death among adolescents. Depression a major cause is often not recognized. Aggressiveness is taken as child being simply angry. Other contributory factors are family history of depression or substance abuse and a recent traumatic event. Today the expectations are so high that they demand too much of themselves leading to disappointment. Even a traumatic event, which may be minor enough, is enough to push them over the edge. No talk of suicide should be taken lightly; any suicidal gesture whether harmless demands immediate professional attention.
