Acute respiratory failure
Respiratory failure usually means disturbance of gas exchange between ambient air and arterial blood (arterial blood pO2 < 8 kPa, arterial blood pCO2 > 6.7 kPa). The primary therapeutic aim is to maintain adequate tissue oxygenation; this consists of oxygenation of arterial blood, cardiac minute volume and the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood (Hb concentration), which must all be taken into account.
