Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD is defined as a disease state characterized by the presence of airflow obstruction due to chronic bronchitis or emphysema. The airflow obstruction generally is progressive, may be accompanied by airway hyper reactivity, and may be partially reversible. Most patients with COPD have smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day for 20 or more years before the onset of the common symptoms of cough, sputum, and dyspnoea. The goal of management is to improve daily living and the quality of life by preventing symptoms and the recurrence of exacerbations by preserving optimal lung function.
