Atelectasis
Atelectasis is defined as diminished volume affecting either part or whole of a lung. Causes of obstructive atelectasis include foreign body, tumor and mucous plugging. In atelectasis of sudden onset, patient may present with dyspnoea and cyanosis. Hypotension, tachycardia, fever and shock may also occur slowly developing atelectasis may be asymptomatic or may cause only minor symptoms. Arterial blood gas determinations show hypoxemia. Treatment is essentially that of the underlying cause.
