Aurothiomalate: in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

The efficacy of Gold salts in Rheumatoid arthritis was established as early as 1935. The injectable version is Sodium aurothiomalate (gold sodium thiomalate). It is used in the treatment of active, progressive rheumatoid arthritis and progressive juvenile chronic arthritis. It produces serious side effects viz skin rash, proteinuria and severe leucopenia. During long term treatment, CBC & urinalysis is recommended before each injection.
