Mastalgia (mastodynia, painful breast)
Mastalgia or painful breast may be either unilateral or bilateral; Pain is the primary symptom of cancer in up to 10 - 15% of the cases but most cases are non malignant. Diagnosis is by a good history and clinical examination of the breasts. Sonography and mammography may be asked in females above 35 yr of age. If no-cancer is found, most of the patients are reassured that the condition is benign. For unrelenting symptoms Danazol or Bromocriptine may be tried.
