Most cases of ABRS are preceded by a viral upper respiratory tract infection and will resolve within a few days without the need for antibiotics. According to the SAHP guidelines, the choice of antibiotic is initially based on the severity of the disease (as determined by evaluation of the patient's history and clinical presentation) and whether the patient has recently been prescribed antibiotics.
