These comprehensive guidelines, a welcome update to those from 2001, incorporate information from several recent studies clarifying the roles of rate control, rhythm control, and antithrombotic therapy in AF. They also provide perspective on important advancements in catheter-based and surgical therapies for AF. The authors call for additional studies to define better the optimal technique for left-atrial catheter ablation, as well as the benefits and risks of this procedure.
